History

Dutch has always been an important language for Japan. During the late Edo and early Meiji period Dutch Learning (Rangaku) was the only way to obtain Western knowledge. It started with the Dutch ship 'de liefde' arriving at Usuki Bay April 19th, 1600. Dutch traders were allowed to interact with the Japanese from Dejima, a small island off Nagasaki. Dutch would remain the official language for foreign contact until 1870. Many Dutch words were adopted in Japanese, such as mes (knife) to mesu (scalpel). Tourists now might want to visit the Dejima island and the Dutch theme park 'Huis ten Bosch'near Nagasaki.

Dutch/Flemish

About 22 million people speak Dutch as a native language, mainly in Belgium and the Netherlands [but also in France, South-Africa, Aruba, Dutch Antilles, Suriname, Indonesia and Namibia]. Standard Dutch in Belgium [South] and the Netherlands [North] shares the same grammar, spelling and dictionaries. There are differences in pronunciation and vocabulary, but overall people understand each other. That might change once people switch to their local dialect. As a student you should study 'Standard Dutch', choose your focus in pronunciation [South/North] and be aware of regional and social variations.
