You simply connect to all sorts of channels each with their own options. It’s then up to you to create meaningful connections to enhance your digital life.

You can also browse other people’s recipes and re-purpose them for your own solutions.

I spend a lot of time in front of a computer and had neglected to look at the details of my physical life. But 2012 brought a New Year’s Resolution of trying to loose weight and get more fit, without drastically changing my life style. Enter self-tracking.

I tried and evaluated most self-tracking apps for web and iphone but there was always a feature or two missing. So I have created a web application the way I liked it and have used it since January 2012. Result: over 10kg sustainable weight loss in a few months, more fit, and all without drastically changing my life style. Here’s what I discovered: eat slightly less, move slightly more. Find patterns and trends in your habits. How to achieve it? Track, graph and tweak.

Track

I started by keeping track of small numbers. Daily weight, kilometers biked, minutes walked. Not even very accurate, it doesn’t matter if you walk for half an hour or 40 minutes. As long as you do and keep track of it. In the long run you will see patterns. And I wasn’t training for the Olympics, so I didn’t care about the details too much. I just wanted to track a few variables in my life and only those which would be easy to assign a number to, daily, for months.

Graph

Once you have entered those numbers it becomes addictive to see the evolution over time and correlation between variables. You start noticing patterns too, short and long term. So, automatically you will see what works for you and what not. You will slowly define goals and stick to them as they came from your own conviction of what works and not from some outside adviser or banana diet program.

Tweak

So now that you are tracking small numbers you will understand the big picture. And you will see what works for you and what not. If it doesn’t you can simply tweak: “To tweak is to optimize a complex system with small adjustments.” Normally this term is used for computers and car engines, but Life is an equally complex system and worth tweaking as well.

In the aftermath of the March 11th, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake (Japan) some Japan based instagram users decided to support the disaster stricken area by gathering beautiful and interesting pictures about Japan. Based on the hashtag #thisisjapan they posted pictures about culture, fashion, art, food, festivals, volunteering, family, heritage, weather and anything else that was either cool, weird or typical. After 1 year the book is finally ready and illustrates the passing of the months, the changing of the seasons and how life goes on as usual despite the earthquake, the tsunami and the nuclear accident in Fukushima.

2011年3月11日の東日本大震災の爪あとが残る中、日本を拠点とした instagram（インスタグラム）ユーザーたちは、美しく、そして印象的な日本の写真を集めることで被災地を支援することを決意しま した。#thisisjapan というハッシュタグを付けて投稿された写真は、日本の文化、ファッション、アート、食べ物、お祭り、ボランティア活動、家族、遺跡、気候など、あらゆる視 線で日本をとらえています。日本を象徴する素晴しいものから、ちょっと奇妙なものまで、バラエティに富んだ写真が集まりました。東日本大 震災から一年が経過した今、フォトブックはようやく完成し、そして、大地震、津波、福島での原発事故が起きたにも関わらず、日々続く生活 や四季の移り変り、ながれゆく時の経過も写し出しています。

This book features pictures mostly taken by iPhone and posted on instagram with the hashtag #thisisjapan. All contributors signed up at printo.jp and formally joined this project allowing us to publish a book and gather donations for charity organizations in Tohoku Japan. We had an overwhelming response and had to choose from 6295 submissions. The final selection of pictures was based on a minimum amount of votes received through the printo website, as well as instagram likes and comments. All #thisisjapan pictures can also be browsed through the printo.jp website.
